DT member Marybeth Lopez created these wonderfully elegant little thank you cards.   This is the time of year for it.   It’s never too late to send a thank you to the hostess of the party you went to in mid-december, or to the friend who took care of your cat while you were out of town, or to the friend who meets you to run every other morning.   I love how Marybeth’s pretty, intricate die cut edges and the small flourished Thank You mirror the curves and detail of the Victorian Hearts!  Wouldn’t these make a pretty set to give someone as a gift?

Designer Spotlight – Julie Warner

Designer Spotlight – Julie Warner

Today I’m posting the 2nd in a series of Designer Spotlights – posts featuring each of the Serendipity Stamps Design Team members.  Each of Serendipity’s designers has a distinctive style.   When I think of Julie’s style I think COLOR!   Julie’s creations are always bold and beautiful and often created with water color (both background and foreground – you won’t find much Designer Paper in Julie’s work!)   Here, in her own words, is how she does it.

Hi, everyone! I’m Julie Warner…I’m a native Texan who now calls north Georgia home.  I’ve always been creative so it was easy for my parents at Christmas… they just gave me paints or papers or really any art supply & I was happy. My creative style is pretty varied & I love experimenting with backgrounds & tricky techniques. Most of the time when I do an involved technique I’ll take some extra pics or add a little tutorial for it on my blog: The Write Stuff.

When I start a project, it always starts w/ the image. Usually by looking at it I get an idea of the direction I want to go. Usually, I color first, then pick the paper to go with it.

When I was working with this beautiful Poinsettia image, I knew immediately I wanted to water color it, but I wanted it to be loose, not necessarily contained by the lines. I love stamping on top of free flowing watercolor backgrounds so that was my plan for this. Instead of pan or tube watercolors, I used Brushos. I lightly wet part of the watercolor paper w/ a spritzer, then sprinkled on the reds, pink & orange colors, then spritzed it again. In areas where the color seemed too concentrated, I took a wet paintbrush & blended it out. I let this dry a little, then repeated it w/ the greens, trying not to go over the red areas.

I used a plastic sheet placed up against the corner inside my Misti & stamped the image. This allowed me to position the paper to stamp the image where I wanted. Since it was big enough, I stamped it twice to use on two different cards.

I decided to deepen the color just a bit inside the leaves/petals of the poinsettia & the easiest way to do this is w/ watercolor pencils.

Instead of using the pencil directly on the image, I used a waterbrush to pick up color from the pencil tip, then painted it onto the image.

poinsettia large close julie

When I’m designing a project, the most important things I concentrate on are color, contrast & composition. I love high contrast (light/dark) & strong color contrast. Here the reds & greens are color opposites so I like that a lot. Since there is so much vibrant red in the image, I went w/ 2 greens (a light & a dark) for the layers.  When I found the two colors of green that agreed w/ each other & w/ the image, I put the poinsettia image on top of each & went w/ the citron on top because it looked the best behind the red & gave more contrast. The dk green didn’t bring out the color as well when it was right next  the poinsettias.

poinsettia large julie

Since this image in on the large size, I trimmed away most of the background around the left side of the image in order to have more of the citron green show. A dk green layer was added behind the poinsettia & also behind the citron layer. The greeting was stamped off the to left to help balance the composition and keep the eye flowing across the card. The blank citron areas give the eye a place to rest & draw the eye to the bright reds of the image. I could have added just a few sequins & I may go back & do that, but I’m pretty satisfied w/ composition as it is w/ the odd number of items (2 flowers  + 1 greeting). Odd numbers are just more pleasing to the eye. The other composition principal I try to follow is demonstrated by this Scalene Triangle below.

If you turn the card horizontally, & lay the left side down, you’ll see the triangle represented by the flowers & greeting.

The finished card is 4.25 x 5.50 (A2).|Stamps: Poinsettia Lg, Celebrate Each Day
